Along the line ..........
The ESK VALLEY LINE is widely considered to be one of the hidden gems of the British railway network. It offers a succession of constant surprises and stunning views along its 36 mile run to and from the traditional Yorkshire fishing port of Whitby. Starting at the historic railway station in the centre of the North Yorkshire port and resort of Whitby, it runs through the picturesque landscapes and countryside of the valley of the River Esk, passing through well-kept stations and on to Grosmont, where it connects with the North Yorkshire Moors Railway (NYMR). The journey then continues through a succession of small communities on its way through the North York Moors National Park to the isolated station of Battersby, on the edge of the moors. The train reverses here and continues to the heart of the vibrant city of Middlesbrough.
Visit an Esk Valley village. Take tea or lunch at Danby (40 minutes from Whitby). Or try Kildale (35 minutes from Middlesbrough). Or another Esk Valley village . . . the choice is yours!

Timetable 2008
Esk Valley trains operate daily between Whitby and Middlesbrough. There are other trains to Middlesbrough, along the Durham coast from Newcastle, from Darlington, Saltburn, York and beyond. On Sundays in the summer there are through trains between the Durham coast, Bishop Auckland, the Esk Valley and Whitby and between Darlington and Whitby.
On Mondays to Fridays, Esk Valley trains leave Middlesbrough for Whitby at 07.08, 10.38, 14.16 and 17.40 and return from Whitby at 08.52, 12.41, 16.05 and 19.15.
On Saturdays, trains leave Middlesbrough at 07.06, 10.38, 14.12 and 17.38 and leave Whitby at 08.45, 12.41, 15.50 and 19.15.Several additional weekday trains now operate between Nunthorpe and Middlesbrough.

Railcard discounts apply to most fares. A special Esk Valley Residents Railcard can be purchased by local residents for £12 a year, offering one third off normal adult fares, as well as other benefits including discounts on the North York Moors Steam Railway.

From Easter and through the summer months until the end of October there are steam trains between Whitby, Grosmont, Goathland ("Aidensfield" from the popular television series Heartbeat) and Pickering operated by the North Yorkshire Moors Railway. The steam services operate on many dates between Easter and October. Reintroduced after a 40 year break regular through trains connect Whitby with Pickering again. The Esk Valley Railway serves beautiful unspoilt villages along the line between Middlesbrough and Whitby. Enjoy the picturesque scenery and
well-kept village stations from the comfort of the train. Sample village hospitality in the cafes and pubs along the line. Information boards at most
stations give details of local facilities and walks. Whitby offers fish restaurants, great beaches, the harbour, a famous Abbey and other attractions
close to the historic railway station in the centre of town.

Walks from the train
The Esk Valley Walk starts high on the moors above Castleton and follows the River Esk to Whitby. The Walk links with the railway at local stations.
Kildale and Great Ayton stations lead to walks up Roseberry Topping or to Captain Cook’s monument. For further details phone: Whitby Tourist

The Esk Valley Railway is one of the first Community Railways and has been designated as a 'community rail pilot line'.
