Walking past Danby Castle  the other day we found out that it's now open to the public and you can look round this 14th century gem for the princely sum of a £1. Knock on the back door of the farmhouse to pay.  It was restored in 1995 by the Dawnay Estates supported by the North York Moors National Park and English Heritage.  The new custodians are doing tea and coffee, will have local icecream for sale in the summer, and will be staging arts events,  'family days' and are in the process of obtaining a licence for weddings.

For more information telphone the National Park Moors Centre 01287 660340

Here are some walks we've done in that area of Eskdale but unfortunately none go past Danby Castle, we have some more to add that will.
